The vines that grow on the slopes of the three rivers Mosel, Saar and Ruwer, have each a different character. The greatest part of the wine is produced at the Mosel. These outstanding wines are dry, with a subtle fruity character, or nobly sweet. The geography and the climate of the extreme slopes create these high quality wines.
Besides Riesling (56%) and Mueller-Thurgau (17%), Elbling, an old indigenous vine, is grown at the river Mosel. The dry, fruity Elbling is a speciality that can be found at the upper Mosel (Ober-Mosel).
The slopes at the river Saar are less steep than at the Mosel, therefore the vineyards receive less warmth and sunshine. The characteristic Saar-Riesling is known for its fruity acid. Vines of a distinctive fruitiness grow at the river Ruwer.
Main vine varieties: Riesling (56%), Mueller-Thurgau (17%), Elbling (8%).
