This very small region, situated at the northern and western slope of the Odenwald between Darmstadt in the north and Weinheim in the South has approximately 450 ha of winegrowing areas. The slopes on the fringes of Odenwald are most suitable for winegrowing because of the soil and the climate. The territory is jagged and cliffy.
Therefore, working in the vineyards is painstaking and costly. Approximately 90 per cent of the vintagers deliver their vines to the region’s largest cooperative in Heppenheim. The Hessian state-owned domain Bensheim cultivates about 10 per cent of the entire winegrowing area.
The region is famous for their Riesling wines. Most of them are dry or semi-dry.
The characteristics of the wines vary depending on the location. Rieslings from higher sites are less acid than those from northern regions. They are distinguished by mineral characteristics. Some Burgunder varieties ripe on the loess soil of the lower regions.

Main vine varieties: Riesling (52%), Mueller-Thurgau (10%), Grey Burgunder (8%).
