With approximately 16 000 ha, Baden is the third biggest winegrowing area in Germany. It spans along 500 kilometres, from north to south, starting at the upper Rhine (Oberrhein) in the Rhine-Neckar-area near Mannheim via Heidelberg to Basel. The biggest part of the area is situated in the Rhine rift (Rheingraben), one of Germany’s hottest regions, protected by the Black Forrest and the Vogesen. The winegrowing area at Breisgau near Freiburg has the highest average temperature and the highest daily hours of sunshine. The best location is near Ortenau and Kaiserstuhl. Furthermore, there are smaller areas around Lake Constance and the Franconian Taubertal.

The wines of Baden differ considerably, due to the soil condition and the climate.

Main vine varieties: Pinot noir (Late Burgunder) for red wine, Pinot gris (Grey Burgunder) and Pinot blanc (White Burgunder) for white wine.
