Saale-Unstrut

Weinberg bei Freyburg (DWI/Hartmann)

The region south of Halle is one of Europe’s most northern winegrowing areas. The location creates fragrant, elegant and classy wines. Most of the area belongs to Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt), 20 ha are located in Thuringia (Thüringen). The winegrowing area looks back on a well-established tradition. The first mention of winegrowing in the monastery Memleben derives from 998 AD. Due to the continental climate with its rough winters, the Saale-Unstrut-area has many precocious vine varieties, especially Mueller-Thurgau.

In 1993, the wine road was opened. It passes by charming valleys, orchards and vineyards. The rivers Saale and Unstrut can be travelled upon. Supra-regional hiking trails and cycle tracks as well as the castle-country-train (Burgenlandbahn) proceed parallel to the wine road. They give you the opportunity to get to known the region, to get in contact with the people, and to go to a local pub.

Main vine varieties: Mueller-Thurgau (22%), White Burgunder (12%), Silvaner (9%).
